The Dog Left for at the Roadside
Sometimes, a single moment is enough to change an entire life. For Julio, it all began on a day that seemed ordinary, on a road where no one took the time to stop.
By the roadside lay a small dog, seriously injured. Passers-by continued on their way, cars drove past, and the world seemed to ignore the suffering that lay before their eyes.
Julio had been hit by a car. Then another. Then yet another. No driver had stopped. No one had turned back to see the small being they had just left behind.
When I received the call, I did not hesitate for a single second. I put on my shoes and left as quickly as possible. Only one thought occupied my mind: to find Julio before it was too late.
When I finally arrived at the scene, the sight was heartbreaking. The little dog lay motionless at the roadside. His body seemed exhausted, and his eyes were almost completely closed. He had barely any strength left.
Then, for a few seconds, Julio opened his eyes again.
He looked at me as if he understood that, this time, someone had come not to abandon him.
It was at that moment that I made him a promise.
‘You will not be alone anymore.’
Julio was not a stray dog. An old lead still hung around his neck. Yet, far from being the symbol of a loving family, it told a very different story: that of a life marked by neglect.
His body was worryingly thin. His coat was infested with ticks, his skin bore the marks of obvious neglect. But what struck most was not his physical condition.
It was the silent sadness in his eyes.
For a long time, Julio had probably never known what safety, tenderness, or freedom meant. He had never had the chance to run freely or to receive a gentle caress.
Freedom finally came to him in the most painful way imaginable.
Before he could hope for a new life, he had to survive the worst.
I took him without wasting a minute to the veterinary hospital. Throughout the journey, I watched his breathing and prayed that he would hold on until we arrived.
The initial examinations quickly revealed the severity of his condition.
Fortunately, he had not suffered any major internal bleeding, but his head trauma was very concerning. Julio remained almost completely still on the examination table, connected to a drip, while his small body fought to stay alive.
I stayed by his side.
At that moment, Julio was no longer simply an injured dog. He was a living being who had been forgotten for far too long.
And I knew one thing: as long as he continued to fight, I would fight alongside him.
A Battle Every Moment
The veterinary team immediately did everything possible to give him a chance to survive.
X-rays revealed the extent of his injuries. Several fractures affected his legs, and his body was covered in wounds. Some injuries could not be treated immediately, as his overall condition remained fragile.
Despite everything, one encouraging sign remained: his heart continued to beat strongly.
We then had only one thing left to do: wait.
Every hour counted. Every breath, every movement, every reaction was carefully monitored.
His fractured leg required urgent surgery. However, before any operation, Julio first had to regain enough stability to withstand anaesthesia.
When the vets examined the fractures more closely, they discovered that the damage was even more extensive than expected. The procedure would be complex, and there was no guarantee that his leg could be saved.
But, at that moment, only one thing occupied my mind.
I simply wanted Julio to live.
After several anxious days, the news we were waiting for finally arrived.
His condition now allowed surgery to be considered.
The operation was successful. The most severe fractures were treated, finally giving Julio a real chance to rebuild his life.
The next day, he gave us a moment that no one will forget.
Very slowly, with infinite care, he sat up.
He placed his paws on the ground and attempted his first steps since the accident.
I could not hold back my tears.
They were not tears of sadness, but of relief.
After everything he had been through, this little dog proved that he refused to give up.
A New Life Filled with Kindness
Once his condition had stabilised, Julio came to continue his recovery at my home.
He needed rest, daily care, and, above all, an environment where he would finally feel safe.
His dressings were changed regularly. He received appropriate food and had a comfortable place to sleep.
For the first time in his life, he no longer needed to be afraid.
He no longer expected someone to harm him or look away.
He could finally simply live as a dog.
Over the following two weeks, his true personality gradually emerged.
Behind all that suffering was a companion of remarkable gentleness.
Julio was calm, affectionate, and deeply grateful. A simple caress, a reassuring voice, or a soft basket seemed to bring him immense happiness.
Very quickly, one thing became clear.
Despite everything he had endured, he retained a tremendous will to live.
His gaze grew more curious every day. He took an interest in everything around him and gradually rediscovered the simple joy of exploring the world.
The broken little dog we had found at the roadside was slowly giving way to a companion full of gentleness and courage.
Yet, just as his recovery seemed to be taking a decisive turn, a new unexpected event was about to change his fate once again.
