Description
Nannie’s Buttermilk Pie is a classic Southern custard pie with a buttery, silky filling baked inside a flaky pie crust. This easy old-fashioned dessert is perfect for holidays, Sunday dinners and family gatherings.
Ingredients
1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
1/2 cup (115 g) unsalted butter, melted
1½ cups granulated sugar
3 large eggs
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 cup buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp fresh lemon juice
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
Pinch of salt
Powdered sugar, for serving (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the unbaked pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish.
2. Whisk together the melted butter and sugar until combined.
3. Add the eggs one at a time, whisking well after each addition.
4. Whisk in the flour, buttermilk, vanilla, lemon juice, salt and nutmeg until smooth.
5. Pour the filling into the prepared pie crust.
6. Bake for 50 to 55 minutes until the center is just set with a slight jiggle.
7. Cover the crust edges with foil if they brown too quickly.
8. Allow the pie to cool completely before slicing.
9. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve at room temperature or chilled.
Notes
Use room-temperature eggs for the smoothest filling.
Do not overbake; the center should jiggle slightly.
Cool completely before slicing.
Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Delicious served with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
