Stuffed French Toast Bites: Crispy, Sweet & Irresistible
What Are French Toast Bites?
French Toast Bites are basically the cuter, more playful relative of classic French toast. Traditionally, French toast dates back to ancient Rome, where stale bread was soaked in milk and eggs and fried for a simple yet satisfying meal. Fast forward to today, and this dish has seen countless transformations. These bite-sized versions take it up a notch by sandwiching hazelnut cream between slices of soft, crustless sandwich bread, giving each bite a delightful, creamy surprise. The addition of cinnamon adds that warm, aromatic flavour that makes these bites completely irresistible.
Ingredients
- Sandwich bread – 6 slices (crusts removed)
- Hazelnut cream – to taste (for filling)
- Eggs – 2
- Milk – 150 ml
- White sugar – to taste (for the soak and for coating)
- Cinnamon – to taste
- Butter – for frying
Method
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, and cinnamon until well combined and smooth. This mixture will transform your plain bread into crispy, golden bites.
- Take two slices of crustless sandwich bread. Generously spread hazelnut cream on one slice, then place the second slice on top to form a sandwich.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the sandwich into smaller bite-sized squares—you can go as big or as small as you like, depending on how snackable you want them to be.
- Dip each bite into the egg mixture, coating it all over, but do not let it soak for too long—a quick dip is all it needs to avoid sogginess.
- Heat a frying pan over a medium heat and add a knob of butter. Once melted and bubbling, place the bites in the pan and cook until golden brown and crispy on all sides, turning occasionally to ensure even browning.
- Once the bites are done, remove them from the pan and toss them in a bowl of white sugar for an extra-sweet, crunchy finish. Serve immediately and enjoy these crispy, sweet little treats.
